Does the word “packing” make you feel anxious? Whether you are going away for two days or ten, the challenge is to bring what you need without carrying your entire life.
You stare at your closet and wonder how on Earth you can fit all your stuff in one suitcase. Then in the last minute, out of doubt, you decide to pack your whole wardrobe. Yeah, I’ve been there too.
From flying to Brazil for a decade dragging three overpacked suitcases through several airports to being a traveler who now can live with a carry-on for 21 days, I truly understand your packing dilemma.
Like my old self, you got OPS (Over Packing Syndrome).
The awesome news: there is a cure woman!
Here are 7 simple ideas to pack smart and travel light:
1. WRITE A CHECK LIST
Avoid packing without a list. It saves you time and money. Before opening your closet, look at the calendar and ask yourself:
– How many days is my trip?
– What is the weather like where I am going?
– What kind of activities do I want to experience during my getaway?
Write down the answers and create a schedule for each day. After you are clear about what you want, you can put together a wardrobe that matches your heart’s intention.
2. BRING WHAT YOU LOVE
This is not the time to find use for that top with the price tag still on or anything that was sitting in your closet for months. Be honest with yourself, if you haven’t worn it by now – chances are you won’t do it while away. Pack what you love to wear and you’ll have no regrets. Deal?
3. MIX AND MATCH
Your travel wardrobe needs to support all the activities of your trip. If you want to swim, you need a bathing suit. If you want to work out, you need comfortable sneakers. If you got a party, you need festive outfits. Select basics in neutral colors that can help you create endless combinations.
4. PACK THREE SHOES
It sounds impossible at first but consistent practice leads to self-mastery! If I did it, you can do it too! Wear one pair and pack the other two. Regardless of how long your trip is, live this principle as the success of your vacation depends on it. You’re welcome!
5. CHOOSE SMALL OVER BIG
The secret is to bring what you need without adding extra bulk. For example, a chunky sweater takes over a lot of room. Instead, choose a light knit cardigan that serves the same purpose and multiplies your luggage space. Instead of a big belt, bring a skinny one. Got the point?
6. LAY YOUR CHOICES ON THE BED
A must-do-packing-exercise before closing your suitcase. It helps you to visualize every outfit combination, review your wardrobe selection against your check list and the best of all: remove the nonessentials.
7. CARRY YOUR LUGGAGE
Once I began to fly with a carry-on, my life as a traveler got better. I felt more joy, freedom and peace. I save on luggage fees. I access my stuff instantly. My suitcase never gets lost. When I arrive at my destination, I don’t need to wait. The carry-on allows me to pick up and go. It’s liberating to get in and out of airports with ease.
Don’t carry things out of anxiety or fear you may need them (bad vibes).
Be clear on your trip’s activities and pack your wardrobe accordingly.
